Supports for People with Disabilities

Support programs, educational opportunities and other learning aids for people with physical, social or intellectual challenges.

One-on-one tutoring for children with disabilities who would otherwise lose school and literacy skills over the summer months. The tutoring is tailored to meet the needs of the student and in consultation with teachers and resource staff. Tutors come to the child's home but if not possible, they can meet the child somewhere in their community. Tutoring is generally for one to three hours per week and lasts for eight weeks.
Application closes at the end of May each year.

Provides virtual one-on-one tech personalized training and support for individuals with disabilities to enhance digital accessibility. Includes:

  • Learn about accessible technologies with the help of a specialist
  • Learn about digital fundamentals
  • Learn about digital skills and job readiness

Provides multiple scholarships and bursaries to support individuals who are blind, deafblind, or have low vision to cover post-secondary studies. By Submitting an application, applicants will automatically considered for any eligible scholarships based on the criteria.

Delivers library materials to individuals who are not able to visit a library in person. Items are chosen by library staff, and delivered to participants every six weeks.

Note: A similar delivery service is available for Community Care Facilities. Facility administration must contact PEI Public Library Service Headquarters to register for this program on behalf of residents.

Centre for Equitable Library Access's (CELA) collection of books and other resources are available in alternate formats for those who are not able to use print materials. Items can be downloaded or borrowed and mailed to the person's home. Resources include:
  • Downloadable books, magazines and other materials
  • DAISY talking books and magazines downloadable directly to player or mobile device (both audio and accessible text are available)
  • DAISY audio books and magazines on CD by mail
  • Braille book by mail
  • Printbraille (children's picture books with braille added) by mail

One-on-one math tutoring for students with diagnosed or undiagnosed learning disabilities, including dyscalculia or general difficulty with math. The program is tailored to each student's individual math ability level.

Early Years Autism Specialists provide individualized services to help preschool and kindergarten aged children who are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders to acquire new skills. Appointments occur at the child's home, early learning centre or school and services can include:
  • Intensive Behavioural Intervention (I.B.I.) for up to 25 hours per week to help children with communication and everyday living skills
  • Transition to school planning
  • Intensive Kindergarten Support (I.K.S.)

Provides a scholarship to students living with type 1 diabetes as an additional financial support for their transition years while recognizing their achievements.

Application opens in January and closes in March each year.
