PEERS Alliance

AKA: PEERS; Prevent Educate Empower Respect Support; Formerly AIDS PEI

Supports individuals affected by or at risk for HIV, Hep C, and other STIs through inclusive programs and services. Works to reduce stigma, promote sexual health for all genders and orientations, and support harm reduction for individuals who use drugs. Support is available to anyone in need.

Offers access to low-barrier HIV testing options in partnership with REACH Nexus. To participate in the project and receive a test kit, individuals must download the "I'm Ready" mobile app. Test kits can be delivered or picked up at the Charlottetown office location.

Provides an in-person peer support group for a transgender or gender-diverse individuals.

Provides a four-day sleep-away summer camp to youth in 2SLGBTQIA+ communities in partnership with Camp Abegweit. Diverse workshops, activities, and games will be offered to empower gender-diverse youth while fostering a safe space for all participants.

Provides a confidential dried blood spot testing which covers HIV, Hepatitis B and C, and Syphilis.

Provides safer drug injection kits. Each kit contains:

  • Sterile syringes
  • Cookers
  • Cotton filters
  • Sterile water
  • Ties/tourniquet
  • External condoms and lube
  • Alcohol swabs
  • Safer use information and stickers

Used injection equipment and other drug paraphernalia can be safely disposed of at the Charlottetown office or in outdoor sharps drop boxes. For more information, please visit the website.

Staff and volunteers lead group sessions for 2SLGBTQ+ youth. Sessions include:
  • Socializing
  • Educational opportunities
  • Discussions
  • Fun activities
  • Snacks are provided
Parents/caregivers are welcome to contact staff prior to each session to find out what the planned discussion/educational topics are in case they have concerns about age-appropriateness for younger teens.

A supportive, non-judgmental space for families with trans or gender diverse children to meet and have discussions with other parents, staff and volunteers of PEERS Alliance. Parents/caregivers will unlearn myths about gender identity and replace those myths with knowledge and support around issues of gender diversity.

The program is based on the two most important parts of a plant: the roots (parents and caregivers) are responsible for nurturing the shoots (children and dependents) to be the best version of themselves they can be.
  • For parents and caregivers: Can join Roots and Shoots group
  • For trans and gender diverse youth ages 12-18 years: Can join a supportive space called Saplings at Charlottetown. For youth in Summerside can join Rainbow Youth Club which occurs at the same time as Roots and Shoots.
  • For gender creative children ages 13 years and younger: Can join shoots portion of the evening that is offered partnership with Wild Child PEI. It includes fun, outdoor programming with staff, volunteers, and kids who are just like them.
