Special Olympics Prince Edward Island

Provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Athletes have access to health services and an education program that provides screenings in important health areas.

Community sport programs that emphasize basic motor skills, basic sport skills and basic sport rules. Athletes follow 5-8 week modules as an introduction to Special Olympics PEI's official sports. From here, athletes have the opportunity to advance to Competitive Sport programs.

Provides an opportunity beyond sports training and competition to gain knowledge and experience through workshops and electives. As athletes complete these, the aim is to build community and support members in reaching their goals. The program also offers a way for athletes to share and apply their skills, interests, and knowledge. Includes:

  • Building confidence, self-respect, and self-worth
  • Facing fears
  • Developing social skills, including teamwork, communication, and networking
  • Gaining knowledge in areas like public speaking, technology, and community advocacy
  • Sharing transferable skills such as goal setting, writing, and being a role model

Provides health services and education to Special Olympics athletes.

Health screenings are provided in eight disciplines:
  • Strong Minds
  • Special Smiles
  • Opening Eyes
  • Fun Fitness
  • Medfest
  • Fit Feet
  • Healthy Hearing
  • Health Promotion
Generally the screenings take place in Charlottetown. The screenings are infrequent so names will go on a waitlist until a screening is organized. Contact for full details about screening offerings.

Youth sports programs aimed at teaching participants and their parents/guardians new techniques which will benefit the child throughout their life. The three programs are based on age and range from young kids receiving early instruction in basic motor skills through play to older youth being introduced to recreational sports in a non-competitive environment.
