PEI Humane Society

AKA: PEIHS; Prince Edward Island Humane Society

Provides care and shelter for homeless dogs, cats and other small domestic animals. Works to promote animal welfare. Offers other services related to domestic animals, including:

  • Surrender and adoption services
  • Investigates animal welfare concerns
  • Lost and found services
  • Dog licensing
  • Online resources

Provides an opportunity for people to adopt dogs, cats, and small domestic animals. Adoption fee includes:
  • Examination by a veterinarian
  • Flea/parasite treatment
  • Vaccinations (including rabies shot if animal is old enough)
  • Spay/neuter surgery
  • Microchipping (for dogs and cats)

Helps to reunite lost pets with their owners, includes:
  • Responds to public concerns about lost/stray domestic animals
  • Shelter and care for lost/stray animals and attempts to locate owners
  • Post lost/stray animals in custody to shelter website
  • Assesses animals for adoption program if owners cannot be found
  • Refers owners of lost pets to www.helpinglostpets.com if animal is not in shelter's care

Officers respond to public complaints or concerns related to animal well-being, includes:

  • Animal welfare checks
  • Responding to reported cruelty
  • Responding to stray or injured animals
  • Seizing abused or dangerous animals
  • Responding to complaints of unlicensed dogs in select coverage areas
  • Bylaw enforcement for some municipalities

Individuals who are no longer able to care for their dogs, cats or small companion animals can rehome them at the shelter.

Provides dog licencing and renewal of licences for pet owners in City of Charlottetown, Town of Stratford, Town of Cornwall and all provincial non-incorporated areas. Licenses can be purchased directly from the PEIHS, Access PEI (Provincial) or the local municipal city or town hall.

Offers a variety of online information for domestic pet adopters or owners. Includes:

  • List of pet-friendly stores
  • List of vet clinics
  • General information about pet care
  • Information about the Animal Welfare Act, PEI Dog Owner's Act, and bylaw enforcement
  • Finding a responsible breeder/Choosing a responsible rescue

Provides temporary safe emergency housing for pets during times of transition and crisis, includes food, daily walks and socialization.

This program is available when space is available at the PEI Humane Society. The shelter reserves the right to deny applicants to this program if shelter capacity is limited.
